More foreigners visiting India for plastic surgery

New Delhi - When a group of women from Uganda embarked on a journey of life in India, little did many of their friends and families at home know that a secret surgery "mommy makeover" was on the route.

The three mothers from the east African country meticulously planned month-long tour around the surgery in New Delhi hoped to be able to return to their husbands looking trimmer and healthier.

Recognize that vanity is a key motivation behind their choice to go under the knife of the surgeon in a distant country, saying that they want their tummies tucked and chest confirmed up so they can wear a bikini again with confidence.

"There are some activities you can do more if you are very heavy," one of the women told AFP, requesting anonymity, post-surgery breast reduction to a clinic in the Indian capital.

"I'm feeling so light now. I can go for a jog or a swim, without attracting all the negative male attention that I made earlier," said the mother of four.

Women staying at a hostel in the heart of the Greater Kailash, are mixing two weeks of postoperative care with shopping and sightseeing favorites like the Red Fort and the Tomb Qutub Minar.

"It's a girls-only trip fun for us," giggled the largest group, aged 40, who is doubling up as a guide for the rest of women, having visited India before once.

"We thought about visiting South Africa, which is closer to home, but expensive," he said. "We are glad we decided to come here."

Mothers of Uganda is among the foreigners from many countries is the addition of surgery for holiday travel including frequent trips to the Taj Mahal in Agra and other tourist spots.

Millions of people worldwide choose to remodel their body through cosmetic surgery each year, despite the risks, such as those highlighted by the French scandal breast implants, where tens of thousands of women have said that they have defective implants removed.

Popular destinations cosmetic surgery including Brazil, Thailand and South Africa, but the women of Uganda, said India's low cost, good medical facilities and English speaking doctors were deciding factors in their choice.

Having surgery away from home means that women need not worry about family or work. They also have the luxury of revealing the surgery only to those who want to.

"Our country is very conscious image. When you run into a friend, instead of saying hello to comment on your weight. It makes you feel bad," said one, a 37-year-old mother of three, including three years - old twins.

"We gossip and make a mountain from a molehill. I wanted to avoid all this," he said.

A "mommy makeover" in countries like the United States and Britain would cost nearly five times more in India, where the average bill would be about half a million rupees ($ 10,000), Delhi, said the surgeon Ajaya Kashyap.

Medical tourism is a booming business in India, especially in the field of cosmetic surgery, which industry experts say is growing between 20 and 30 percent annually.

Kashyap said mothers seeking makeovers are usually in their thirties or early forties, have completed their families and are financially independent with a disposable income.

"My journey began long before I took the flight to India," said one of the mothers in Uganda. "It started in my bedroom to be precise.

"I squirmed at the thought of taking off my clothes. Protruding my belly and hanging breasts become so difficult. My wife teased as well, "he said. Kashyap says that the company has good and awareness of the relatively low risk increases the process.

"My toilet had begun to resemble a pharmacy," said Brown. "I used them as the last straw, because they were so expensive. I realized the futility slowly.

"Coming to India meant neighbors back home will not get to know about the surgery my change is not very obvious, but just as you would like to get my confidence."
